In a recently released annual report, BHC chairman Edwin Cowen said that the lack of adequate three bedroom apartments is not a new problem.

He said the 1991 Census showed that there were 7,379 occupied houses with three or more bedrooms.

Of these 5,551 were owner occupied and 1,828 were rental units. Of these 1,151 were rented by Bermudians and 677 were rented by non-Bermudians.

Mr.Cowen said the problem has not eased since the Census.

"The result is that there is a shortage of three bedroom units for our target group at rent levels which they can afford.'' Consequently, he said the BHC acquired two properties which have added four three bedroom units to its portfolio and the corporation is currently renovating homes it already owns.

Plans are underway to convert and upgrade 32 houses to three bedroom unit status over the next few years.

Mr. Cowen said promoting home ownership among its target population is still a top priority.

Moreover he said that efforts are continuing to ensure that tenants whose circumstances had improved move on to make way for others with greater need.
