More than one percent of Bermuda's population -- 675 people -- joined in the effort along the 15 miles of the Railway Trail on Friday and Saturday.

They included Government Ministers Terry Lister and Alex Scott, the Governor's wife Jennifer Masefield and Opposition politicians John Barritt, Michael Dunkley, Kim Young, Grant Gibbons and Allan Marshall.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful Executive Director Lennox Boodram said beer bottles were the most numerous item found.

But he said abandoned bikes and cars as well spare parts littered the Island's hedge ways. Other items included abandoned boats, sofas, carpets and computers.

Mr. Boodram said: "It is apparent that the Railway Trail is a victim not only of casual littering but is also being used as an illegal dumping ground which should be closely monitored in the future.

"As the Bermuda Railway Trail becomes increasingly more popular with both locals and visitors alike it is a tragedy that the beauty of this historic walkway is being spoiled by the careless and thoughtless actions of certain people.'' Mr. Boodram had special praise for Esso Bermuda for allowing their workers time off on Friday to do their bit.

And he added: "We would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who selflessly gave up their Saturday morning and turned out with such enthusiasm and energy as we all worked together to Keep Bermuda Beautiful.''
