Teams jet in for five days of Goodwill golf
Bermuda?s annual Goodwill Tournament, one of the longest-running golf events in Bermuda, tees off again tomorrow with another bumper entry of more than 90 teams, the majority from the USA and Canada.
For the second successive year teams of four ? one professional and three amateurs ? will play 90 holes over five separate courses ? Riddell?s Bay, Belmont Hills, Port Royal, Tucker?s Point and Mid Ocean Club, with all of those local clubs as well as Ocean View and St. George?s represented in the field.
A number of top players will be leading their respective teams with Ron Philo, who qualified for this year?s US Open, spearheading a challenge from the Amelia Island Plantation Club.
Top Bermudian Michael Sims, the touring pro for Belmont Hills, Jamaica?s European Seniors Tour pro Delroy Cambridge and perennial visitor Tim Conley, all of whom played in this week?s Gosling?s Invitational, will be leading their respective clubs as will Bob Duval, the father of former world number one David Duval.
In total 91 teams have signed up, including GC Villa Carolina from Milan, Italy who are returning after an absence of 10 years.
John Carr, brother of longtime Goodwill participant Joe Carr, has made the trip from Thailand in order to compete.
However, defending net champions Kilmaric CC are not returning, meaning that new winners will be crowned come next Friday.
In addition to the net tournament, teams will also compete for a gross title while all of the pros will be playing a five-day stableford as well as the team best-ball.
Two female professionals are in the field with Jennifer Webster playing for the first time and representing the ?B? team for the Country Club out of Massachusetts.
Lynn Valentine returns, fresh from qualifying for the Ladies? Future?s Tour. She?ll be playing for the ?B? team of Bedrock GC also from Massachusetts.
The event officially opens this evening with a welcoming cocktail reception at Riddell?s Bay, starting at 6 p.m., and play begins tomorrow, continuing on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with each team playing all five courses.
St. George?s Club will host a casino and games evening on Wednesday?s rest day and the event winds up with a gala banquet at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel next Friday night.
