Music and a little unexpected drama at the Folk Club

Violin group: Fiddlesticks features Camille Lesage, Aisling Homan and Kirsty Pollett

There was excitement of an unexpected nature at the Bermuda Folk Club on Saturday when a passing boat accidentally hit nearby rocks as the evening of music was in full swing.

Some members of the audience got up to investigate and to lend a hand, pushing the boat back out to deeper water so that it could continue on its way.

The unscheduled drama did not disrupt what proved to be a perfect night of musical entertainment under the stars at the rear of the Spanish Point Boat Club.

One of the highlights was a performance by three young violinists from the Bermuda School of Music.

Camille Lesage, Aisling Homan and Kirsty Pollett, known as Fiddlesticks, gave a delightful sample of jig music, including the Irish tune Drowsy Maggie — one of a number of tunes they had played during summer violin camps in Ireland and the US.

There was time for a few solo efforts before the trio finished with Gentle Milkmaid, which made a great impression of the audience.

Another standout performer was Ecuador’s Milton Villamarin, who has become one of the most popular performers at the Folk Club since first appearing as one half of the Los Bohemios duo in 2012.

Mr Villamarin took the audience on a musical journey of South America with tunes that included Si Se Calla El Cantor, Colebiala and Llora Guitarra. His expressive guitar playing combined a variety of styles, often intermingling in a compelling style, with flourishes of flamenco alongside deft fingerpicking and tight bass lines. His accomplished singing proved to be as expressive as his guitar playing.

Mike Keats brought lighthearted fun with a set themed on composers and singers named George. This included a George Harrison number and a high-energy rendition of the Wham! hit Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. He concluded his musical outing by teaming up with harmonica player Eddie Wicks to great effect.

Singer Alex Alferez impressed with a three-song set, accompanied on guitar by Jamie Lovell. Mr Alferez’s powerful vocal delivery brought out new dimensions in his cover of Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror, while his interpretation of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song reverberated wonderfully through the warm evening air.

Another Marley song, Three Little Birds, featured in a high-powered late evening solo set by Mr Lovell, who mined his extensive repertoire of popular songs. His version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Proud Mary was memorable, as was his turn on Neil Young’s Heart of Gold.

Club stalwart Peter Haynes opened and closed the night, delighting the audience with his range of sing-a-long numbers, which included In My Liverpool Home, Wild Rover, and a selection of timeless Buddy Holly classics.

The Folk Club returns on October 11.
