Hornets in hunt for Martonmere silverware

Boulevard and Dandy Town will vie for the inaugural Player Development League (PDL) Martonmere Cup today at the National Sports Centre's (NSC) North Field.

The Martonmere Cup was originally a Premier Division competition before the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) made sweeping changes to the format of domestic football.

In the semi-finals, Dandy Town thrashed Young Men's Social Club 10-1 with national academy midfielder Ricco Wells grabbing four goals.

His older brother Nahki Wells also scored twice while Treadwell Gibbons, Lynn Tucker, Jahmel Swan and Rieko Furbert also got on the scoresheet. Clay Darrell scored for Young Men's Social Club.

Boulevard were made to sweat it out in their 2-1 win over Devonshire Cougars in the semis.

Angelo Simmons gave the Blazers the lead before Ajani Gibbons added another when he converted from the penalty spot.

Cougars managed to get one back with a Jesse Seymour strike, but were unable to find the equaliser.

Hornets Director of Football Cal Blankendal said he had been pleasantly surprised by the success of the side this season.

"A win will re-confirm that as long as we continue to follow our core club initiatives, youth, coaching and technical development we will be successful ...", he said.

"The projection (this season) was top four in the Premier Division and to see if we could actually sustain both a competitive Premier and PDL team.

"The reason why we are where we are is due to three things; a three-year plan, a renewed focus on homegrown coaches and a collaborative effort between the executive, coaches, players, members and fans."

Today's match starts at 4 p.m. after the Women's FA Cup final between North Village Lady Rams and Dandy Stars at 2 p.m. at the North Field. Lady Rams beat Prospect Lady Panthers 8-2 thanks to the league's leading goalscorer Shuntae Todd, who scored five goals.

Ashley Wall grabbed a brace, while Jennifer Toope was also on target.

Lara Corriea scored both of Lady Panthers goals. Stars defeated the Lady Bluebirds 3-0, with Rickelle Smith striking twice, while Lakila Hart got the other goal.
