Entries flood in for ferry competition

More than three thousand entries have been received in the "Name the Ferry Contest,'' preventing the Transport Ministry from announcing the winner on Friday.

At a press conference when the winner was to be announced, Transport Minister, Dr. Ewart Brown said the ministry had been inundated with entries and they would now reveal the new name in the first week in June.

Dr. Brown used the opportunity to reveal the new interior of the first new ferry which was designed by professional interior designers -- By Design Ltd.

The design brief said that the desired impression for the interiors should be plush, comfortable and appealing, while maintaining practicality and meeting US Coast Guard specifications and standards regarding fire codes, safety and welfare.

Dr. Brown said that the new ferries would provide a very high level of comfort and said: "They will have padded seats, air conditioning and heating, a concession area, and tables for people to work, read the newspaper or drink their coffee or tea.'' He said the upper deck will provide a good amount of outside space for viewing which is popular with visitors.

Dr. Brown said of the interiors: "The overall feeling is vibrant, with contrasting colours of green and fuschia used in accents and fabric patterns for the upholstery and carpeting. "The concession area boasts all the amenities to provide a comprehensive snack service and the use of high quality solid surface counter tops, light wood facade with colour accents along with custom details makes an attractive focal point.'' He also said that the combination of colourful finishes and textures portrays a sophisticated ambience that is both casual and elegant to give the ferry passenger an up market, and enjoyable experience, whether tourist, commuter or student.

The first ferry is scheduled to arrive in October of this year and a second in January next year. Government has said the whole project will cost the taxpayers $25 million.
