Jubilation as Warriors grab first win of the season

St David’s 2 Boulevard 0The dark cloud that has hung above the tightly knit St David’s community in recent weeks finally blew over yesterday as Warriors celebrated their first league win of the season at Lords.Goals either side of the half from skipper Fiqre Crockwell and Dominique Lambert gave the hosts a deserved win against a Blazers side that paid the price for some sloppy finishing. Those in St David’s have been in a state of mourning following the deaths of former skipper Landro Minors and his godmother Roseann Pitcher, the mother of Warriors’ midfielder OJ Pitcher. But yesterday’s inspiring win against Blazers gave the home team something to finally cheer about and the sight of their loyal fans rushing onto the field in wild jubilation after the final whistle had blown perhaps best summed up the occasion.“Landro and aunt Rosie are both inspirational people in St David’s,” commented Warriors coach Kameron Fox, who took his team’s triumph all in stride. “We are a community in St David’s more than a football or cricket club and we believe in family first and then go from there.”Fox rested several of his team’s big guns in their previous outing with North Village Rams to ensure they were fresh for yesterday’s home clash with Boulevard, his team’s first home encounter since former captain Minors was killed in a traffic accident earlier this month. And the decision seemed to pay off as Warriors proved equal to the task.Fox hoped yesterday’s win was a sign of bigger and better things to come for his players.“I just hope this win inspires guys to do more and show them that we can still avoid relegation because there’s still a lot of points out there,” he said.Kicking into the wind, it was Blazers who threatened first when the wiry Melchisedec Gibbons turned his marker inside out but dragged his low drive just wide of the far post.Warriors were shaky from the outset but turned the match on its head when Crockwell’s crisp shot from the top of the 18-yard box took a wicked deflection and left Blazers’ makeshift goalie Robert Wilson wrong-footed as the ball rolled inside the far post. The goal breathed confidence into St David’s and they nearly increased their lead when DeJuan Paynter’s piledriver whistled past the upright and OJ Pitcher’s blast from all of 30 yards sailed just wide.Blazers always looked threatening on the quick break and their pace created plenty of anxiety for the Warriors’ defence who were spared the blushes when Temeiko Wilson scooped the ball over the bar as St David’s ‘keeper George O’Brien Jr raced off his line to narrow the angle. That the home team prevailed owed much to man-of-the-match O’Brien who made a series of clutch saves to keep his team on course for victory. O’Brien pulled of a fine save at the near post to deny Sergio Robinson before Wilson shot wide when scoring seemed easier. At the other end, Warriors’ Aaron Crockwell missed a sitter and Tre Govia had a goal-bound shot cleared off the line.Blazers enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the second half and did everything but put the ball into the back of the net as a now defensive-minded Warriors clung to their slim advantage with the wind in their faces. The visitors had a corner kick cleared off the line, O’Brien dived to his left to thwart Wilson while Melchisedec Gibbons also had a header cleared off the line. Sub Ricky Saltus should’ve done better with a free diving header that sailed wide while Shenonda Outerbridge also placed his effort from an acute angle wide of the post. These near misses ultimately came back to haunt Blazers as Lambert’s header at the back post from Anthony Burchall’s cross slipped through the fingers of ‘keeper Wilson and trickled across the goaline to leave the visitors completed gutted.St David’s: G O’Brien Jr, D Butterfield, A Cannonier, A Lugo, T Govia (A Burchall, 70), A Crockwell (K Minors, 61), OJ Pitcher, D Paynter, O Minors, F Crockwell, D Lambert (E Robinson, 86)Goals: F Crockwell 3, D Lambert, 85Booked: G O’Brien Jr, D LambertBoulevard: R Wilson (capt), C Hayward, A Gibbons, A Foggo, S Furbert (A Francis, 85 mins), D Taylor, S Robinson, M Gibbons, S Outerbridge, A Famous, T WilsonReferee: T MouchetteMan of the match: G O’Brien Jr (St David’s)
