Simmons goal settles KO final

won the Shell Minor (lower) Division KO Trophy while St. George's won a nail-biter to earn a place in last night's Shell Bantam semi-finals.

The first game of the day saw PHC take on an under-strength Devonshire Colts in a Shell Minor Division league game. The young Zebras ran out 5-1 winners with goals from Kamen Tucker (2), Dennis Russell, Dennis Joell and Justin Lambert.

Lorenzo Simmons' early goal against Southampton Rangers in the Minor Division KO final stood as the winner. The Cox brothers, Darrius and Daniel, spurred on Rangers in their fightback as the Town defence was often stretched to the limit.

However, some fine defending and outstanding goalkeeping from Marcus Basden allowed Town to hang on to their slim lead.

The Bantam teams from PHC and St. George's produced an exciting match which saw the scores tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation time before St. George's won on penalty kicks.

Despite playing two men short, Zebras dominated most of the game. But each time they took the lead St. George's used their advantage to equalise shortly after. Kori Tucker gave PHC the lead three times and on each occasion the lead was wiped out with Mackie Crane scoring twice and Kyle Tannock once.

In the penalty shoot-out, the only spot kick missed was the first taken by PHC captain Steven Astwood who had been his team's most valuable player, having played in just about every position, including goalkeeper, in an effort to spur his team on.

The St. George's win pitted them against Dandy Town last night in the semi-final at BAA Field. Town reached the semis by default over Somerset. The other semi-final was due to be played between North Village and league champions Wolves.

Tonight, Devonshire Colts Whites play St. George's Blue in the Shell Mini Minor division at Gym Field at 5.30 p.m. while the Shell Premier Division KO semi-final sees champions North Village take on runners-up Boulevard in what should be a close game at Bernard Park, also at 5.30.
