Dunleavy ends sticks' dream run
since George Siggins in 1970 to go undefeated and win the Open when he lost this year's Four Star Bermuda Open singles final to Steve Dunleavy 4-3.
The match was a repeat of the 1988 final, which Dunleavy won 4-2, and marks his fourth championship in the last seven years.
The partisan crowd were solidly behind the underdog Henderson applauding nearly every pot he made.
Regardless, Dunleavy took the first frame and never trailed in the match, winning the deciding frame by a comfortable margin.
Dunleavy's run to the championship included wins over Wally Tucker, Renaldo Bean, Tony DeSilva, Mike Tatem and `Honky' Burrows .
A win by Henderson would have been the frosting on a Cinderella season for him. In addition to going 16-0 in the regular season, he led his team, Sandys Sports Club to promotion into the First Division and had the year's highest break -- a 53.
In the Open Doubles it was Brian Haxton and Phil Lambert of Old Colony Club taking a black ball in the deciding fifth frame to narrowly edge Nationals' Tony and David (Bushes) DeSilva.
The winners received specially embroidered silk jackets from Four Star Pizza owner Marico Thomas as well as trophies.
In league play-off matches the two divisional champions, Nationals and Sandys Sports Club both advanced to the finals with similar 3-0 wins.
Nationals' captain Stephen Pantry won the first game over Chris Dakin of Queens 54-41 and then Paul Charleton made breaks of 25 and 24 in crushing Paul Doidge 83-21 in the second match. Tony DeSilva ended it, edging Mike Zimmerman 49-41.
Sandys advanced to the final on the strength of victories by Henderson and Zane and Anthony DeSilva over Dave McLean, Robert Gaglio and Phil Lambert.
The finals take place tomorrow night at Old Colony Club.
Invitees to the Island Construction Calcutta tournament are reminded that their entry forms must be submitted by Friday.
