Anglers raise more than $6,000 for cancer charity
An angling club raised more than $6,600 for cancer charity Pals with a month-long fundraising drive.
Blue Waters Angling Club this month – international Cancer Awareness Month – got members to take pledge sheets for Pals out among the public.
They managed to raise $6,688 – well over the $5,000 goal.
Colleen English- De Grilla, the executive director of Pals, said: “We are truly grateful for all donations received, especially during this challenging time.”
She told the public: “Please be assured that these funds will be put to good use as we continue our mission to care for cancer patients in the community at no charge to themselves or their families.
“We receive no government grants and rely solely on individual and corporate donations."
The fundraiser’s theme was “The Men and Women of Blue Waters Anglers Club Don Pink in support of Cancer Awareness”.
Staff and club members wore pink ties and ribbons instead of their normal blue ties at a special cocktail presentation held at the East Broadway club on Tuesday.
Raymond Bean, the club president, said: “It went off extremely well. We had a cocktail presentation and two ladies joined us from Pals.
“We presented them with the cheque and a plaque one of our members, Kurt Ming, made out of Bermuda cedar with both of our logos acknowledging Cancer Awareness Month 2020 and the indispensable service that Pals provides to Bermuda.”
Mr Bean added: "We want to do this every year for Pals. What made us gravitate towards them is that they soldier on and quietly go about doing their work and do it well.
“There are a number of our members who have friends and family members who received services.“
Pals was founded in 1980 to allow cancer patients to stay at home rather than in hospital.
The club will fly a cancer awareness flag until the end of the month.
