Fraternity's local alumni chapter earns award

The Bermuda chapter of US fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha has been named as the organisation's outstanding alumni chapter of the year.

Epsilon Theta Lambda of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated carried away the coveted title of National Outstanding Alumni Chapter of the Year 2008 at the fraternity's general convention in Kansas City, Missouri. In March, the Chapter was crowned Chapter of the Year in the Eastern Region.

"It's phenomenal to be recognised by your peers and being the first international chapter to win was an overwhelming experience to us," said Chapter president Diallo V. Rabain.

"We've been doing so much here on the Island that we were excited to be recognised for it as the most outstanding chapter in the Fraternity."

Community programmes spearheaded by the chapter include: Co-ed Prison Facility Outreach Program, Project Alpha, The Big Brothers/Big Sisters programme, Math Attack at Dellwood Middle School; the Alpha Beautillion, Boy Scouts of Bermuda; Support of MLK Foundation, Martin Luther King Jr. 5K walk, Father/Son Breakfast, Boys' Reading Club, Bermuda Youth Library as well other social events to raise funds for local charities.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., consists of a total of 683 alumni and undergraduate chapters worldwide and has initiated over 175,000 members since its inception at Cornell University in 1906.
