St. George's looking to the future

Early indications suggest St.George's Cricket Club are looking to rebuild for the future as the Cup Match challengers have included five teenagers in their final trial match at Wellington Oval on Saturday.

Bailey's Bay all-rounder Rodney Trott and St. George's league players Detroy Smith and Oronde Bascome have been named in the Vice-President's XI which will be captained by the latter's father and former St. George's Cup Match skipper Herbie Bascome.

Promising fast-bowler Stefan Kelly and St. George's' all-rounder Allan Douglas Jr. - son of former St. George's, Cleveland and Bermuda wicketkeeper Allan Sr. - have been named in the President's XI, captained by Gregg Foggo.

St.David's all-rounders OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden - a colt last year - have apparently put club before country and made themselves available for selection instead of travelling overseas to Jamaica next week with the Island's Under 23 national team.

Foggo, like his opposite number Janeiro Tucker, is about to follow in his father's (Brutus Foggo) footsteps as a second generation Cup Match skipper.

Foggo has been given the task of recapturing the coveted cup his brother-in-law Herbie Bascome lost to Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club in 2000.

Last year's skipper Charlie Marshall has also been invited to play in Saturday's match, despite announcing his retirement from the annual mid-summer classic after 23 years following a tame draw at Wellington Oval.

Trott, who displayed enormous maturity with the willow representing his club Bay during last week's Eastern Counties, is arguably one of the Island's top spin prospects - talents the East Enders might be quick to harness for the future.

Trott could come into the team as a specialist spinner, the likes of which has not been seen since the days of David (Chick) Adams - now a Cup Match selector - and another legendary Bay spinner, the late Stan (Schaeffer) Smith.

Kelly, currently enrolled at Oakham School in England, could provide the challengers with another attacking option in the bowling alongside Bascome - who has failed to take a wicket in the last three classics - skipper Foggo, Mackie Crane and Clarkie Trott while fast-bowler Ryan Steede could be set to make a first Cup Match appearance in three-years.

There are those in the East End who feel young Oronde is ready to make his appearance in the annual classic as he has been groomed in recent years at the top of the St. George's batting order. Another club player, Douglas, has enjoyed a few good performances with both bat and ball earlier this season while both Pitcher and Borden continue to improve in leaps and bounds.

Of concern to the East Enders, however, is the present status of Bermuda skipper Clay Smith and explosive batsman Glenn Blakeney. Both players are currently plagued by knee and groin injuries, something the St.George's' selectors will keep a close eye on Saturday.

Veteran spinner Eugene (Calabash) Foggo is also back for another bite at the cherry after being overlooked by the selectors last year. However, league wicketkeeper Jason Anderson - who has been in good form this season with the bat and tidy behind the stumps after sitting out the last campaign through suspension - has not been included in Saturday's final trial match.

That spot in the challengers' team now appears to have been cemented by St.David's Islander Chris Foggo.
