$20 million donated to Bermuda Hospitals Board

The $20 million donated by Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT) to the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) as part of the Why it Matters Campaign was formally handed over yesterday by way of cheque.

Raised from fundraising, the money goes towards the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s new Acute Care Wing. The campaign was launched in 2011 and has raised over $31 million of its $40 million goal.

BHCT chairman Phillip Butterfield said: “This history making campaign has brought together various constituency groups across our Island for a common cause-that common cause being the redevelopment of our hospital.

“Our team of trustees and volunteers has worked tirelessly in pursuit of our objective.

“All of us appreciate the generosity of everyone that has contributed to date and we look forward to the support of our entire community as we bring this campaign to a close.”

Jonathan Brewin, chairman of the BHB spoke on the importance of the BHCT in the development of the New Acute Care Wing.

“Without the outstanding of the Bermuda Charitable Trust, this wouldn’t have been possible and I have to extend my sincerest personal thanks of all of the team,” he said.

“To all the donors, both public and corporate, we are truly humbled by your generous support.

“In the next few weeks you’ll be hearing more about the opportunity for members of the public to come and see the building and to understand how it’s all going to fit together.”

BHCT will continue fundraisers over the next few months to fulfil their $40 million goal.
