Island unaffected by US shortage of baked goods
will not be felt in Bermuda, the local supplier of the baked goods reassured yesterday.
The shortage of the products, which includes Wonder Bread, has been caused along the East Coast of the US by a Teamsters strike which has shut down five bakeries.
Interstate Bakeries Company (IBC) produces the items which are distributed locally by supplier Richard Powell, who also owns Lines Food and Liquor Mart on Ord Road in Warwick.
He said yesterday that he was unaffected by the strike because he dealt with IBC bakeries in other parts of the US.
Mr. Powell noted that he was set to receive a shipment of goods from the firm today.
The strike began a week ago when 1,400 Teamsters responsible for delivery and sales of products from IBC's only New England bakery, in Biddeford, Maine, walked off the job.
