Developer Eddie DeMello has applied for permission for a new access road to his controversial housing complex being built in Southampton.

In February Riviera Crescent residents blocked their roadway in protest at heavy vehicles continuously driving past their homes to the building site.

They claimed that construction workers could use another, less public, access path to the development but Mr. DeMello said he had right of way along Riviera Crescent.

Yesterday it appeared the residents might be able to get their wish.

Protest organiser Barclay Carmichael said he was hoping and expecting Mr. DeMello to apply for the new route but had heard nothing official.

He said: “We're in support of it.”

Mr. Carmichael said he didn't want to speak any more until the Development Applications Board had decided on the issue.

Mr. DeMello took a similar stance. But he said: “I don't need any more publicity.”

Recently Mr. DeMello said another access route would bring greater value to his condos.

The development will consist of 12 two-bedroom apartments in three blocks on a two-and-a-half-acre site.
