Stepping up to the wicket in style

Stylish: This model shows off how a cut out dress can show a little extra skin, but not too much

If there’s one time of year when Bermudians are bound to ‘step up to the wicket’ when it comes to their style, it’s Cup Match.

If you’ve ever shown up to the cricket field wearing the same outfit as someone else in the crowd, then you know standing out isn’t always an easy task.

Living on an Island of only 21 square miles comes with some unique style challenges. That’s why The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section asked the professionals to weigh in on some of the season’s hottest trends for hair, nails and fashion — hopefully some of their tips will help you to look your best this holiday weekend.

Fashion:

When it comes to Cup Match style everyone is looking for something unique to wear, said Diane Whittaker of International Modelling Academy.

“This is a holiday where people might even wear something a little outrageous because they are in a party and festive mood and want something that will make them stand out,” she explained.

She encouraged people to stick to styles that are age-appropriate. And while younger women might want to wear sheer shirts or skirts, more mature women should opt for harem pants or kaftan tops in bold colours.

“I am finding that women today are taking much more interest in a classic look,” Ms Whittaker explained. “They are looking to stand out and be different and stylish with a capital S, and be out with their friends looking good.”

While many people will opt to wear their team colours over the holiday, an easy way to stand out is by breaking the mould and wearing something in a bold hue — think sherbet, hot pink or turquoise.

She also recommends that people try out the following trends this holiday season:

1. High-waisted bottoms. This style works well with everything from shorts and maxi skirts to pants and when paired with a crop top reveals just the right amount of skin, without showing off too much.

2. Tribal prints. This style is still very big this year and can be spotted in all colours and styles, on shorts, skirts and dresses. One tip is to keep tribal prints to a minimum. If your top is printed, pair it with a bold coloured short or skirt so you stand out, without looking over the top.

3. Cut-outs. Dresses with cut-outs such as bows or knots have been popular in local stores this season. The reason? Because they show a little bit of skin without being too seductive, said Ms Whittaker. “It’s quite fashionable and the classy way to show off your figure. You are still able to be trendy and youthful and get into the Cup Match spirit.”

Hair & Nails:

Truth be told a weekend filled with lots of sun, sand and swimming can wreak havoc on your hair.

Hair stylists say the best way to keep your hair looking good this Cup Match weekend is with low-maintenance styles.

If you’re planning on a day out on the water they recommend a sea salt texturising hairspray that could be sprayed into wet hair to add a wavy look.

Those who expect to dance the night away should try a stylish, messy bun or braiding their hair in the front and leaving it curly or straight in the back.

The experts believe such styles offer a sense of individuality while also ensuring your hair won’t distract you from having a good time.

Colourful hairspray: One sure fire way to stand out this Cup Match is by trying out a temporary colour. Dyes tend to be more long lasting, which explains why local stylists have seen an increase in people requesting for their hair to be sprayed in their team colours — red and blue for Somerset or dark and light blue for St George’s.

Braids, buns, and lots of hair accessories are also sure to be popular this season. Those headed to the beach can try a hat or visor instead.

When it comes to nails, some local nail technicians have seen an increase in the amount of people asking for designs in their team colours.

Maxine Simms-Famous, of Maxilous Salon, has especially seen a lot of St George’s fans come in to get light and dark blue nails.

To pull off this look you can try a French manicure, but rather than the traditional white and beige swap that out with your team colours. Or get creative with your design to make sure you look unique from head to toe (literally).

Ms Simms-Famous said: “Clients go the extra mile to get their nails designed in their favourite Cup Match team colour to show team loyalty and rivalry in designs and colours with other ladies.”
