New Somerset store offers clothing for the cost-conscious
A new store has opened in Somerset, claiming to offer fashionable clothing at ‘Wal-Mart prices’.Doris Wade, owner of the new discount Stretch A Dollar store, will open the doors this Saturday selling contemporary clothing, shoes and accessories with the average price hovering around $35.“We need something like this here, Wal-Mart prices with a unique boutique style,” said Ms Wade. “We offer affordable and quality merchandise.”The bright 1,200-square-foot store is located in what was formerly the Simmons Ice Cream Factory, across the street from Telford Electric. From shirts and shoes to jeans and accessories, Stretch A Dollar has clothing for men, women and children.Ms Wade is no stranger to the small business community as she used to own X-Clue-Sive Creations, a paint-your-own-pottery shop on King Street in Hamilton but had to close due to personal medical reasons. She is now enrolled as a part-time student in the Maryland Institute College of Art working towards a certificate in altered forms, which includes ceramics, jewellery and graphic design. Ms Wade has three part-time workers helping to man the shop while she is at school.“Being in school in Maryland and seeing the prices and what is available out there, I don’t see why we can’t offer similar prices here,” she said. “I found a supplier where I can keep my prices down to be more affordable.”Shoes — including boots, stilettos and sneakers — average $35 and jeans start at $15, Ms Wade is hoping that the store’s premise will resonate with shoppers.“With these economic times everyone is looking for a deal and this is an all-year-round discount clothing store, so it’s not just for the hard times that we’re having,” she said.Starting in April the shop will offer sizes for fuller figured women, up to size 4x and up to size 12 in women’s shoes. Men’s sizing go up to 48-50.Considering Bermuda is still suffering from the effects of the ongoing recession, one might question if this is the ideal time to open a new store but Ms Wade thinks otherwise.“I feel it’s a perfect time to open this type of store,” she said. “There is a need for us to be able to afford things all year round here instead of just waiting for Christmas or sales. That’s what we’re here for.”Being from Somerset, Ms Wade knows the area well and being that the rents are cheaper out west, she chose to set up shop there.“Bermuda is small — we always say from St George’s to Somerset but it only takes a half-hour to get here but we’ll travel an hour to get a mall in the US. If you’re here in Bermuda, it’s less a plane ticket and a short ride to Somerset,” she said. “With our savings you’ll be able to purchase gas as well. The drive is definitely worth it.”The shop’s hand-painted sign is going up this week, created by Ms Wade herself.Twice a month, Stretch A Dollar will also be holding their Savings Saturdays that features an additional ten percent off your purchase. This Saturday, their grand opening, will include the ten percent additional discount.“We want people to come down, have a look, see what we have to offer and realise there is somewhere on the Island where they can stretch their dollar,” said Ms Wade.Stretch A Dollar will be open Wednesday-Saturday, 10am-8:30pm, Sunday from 12pm-4:30pm.
