Bermuda's firearms amnesty has yet to yield its first working firearm, although a number of bullets have been handed in.

More than 20 items have been surrendered to Police over the nine days of the amnesty, which runs until December 13.

A flare, a knife, a Police-style baton, a toy pistol, two flare guns, a bow and arrow, a cap gun, a pellet rifle and a paintball gun have been removed from Bermuda's streets over the past week.

What Police describe as a “small, black firearm” is also on the list of surrendered prohibited weapons, although it has been confirmed that it is only a replica.

The amnesty, the Island's first since 1994, was introduced following violence at a White Hill Field concert where a firearm was brandished during massive public disturbances.

Machetes and baseball bats were also wielded by thugs as Town versus Country gang violence reared its ugly head.

Eight people, aged between 16-25, were arrested and released on bail in relation to the incident although no charges have yet been laid by Police.

The last amnesty, a response to a double shooting at a Hamilton nightclub, also got off to a slow start, with Police having to extend the hours of operation to 24 hours a day to encourage the public to hand in their weapons.
