Two charged with attempted murder

Three men appeared in Magistrates? Court yesterday charged with last week?s machete attack on Kuma Smith, 28.

Harron Lee Powell Evans, 29, of Tills Hill, Pembroke, and Davon Michael Marson, 27, of Happy Valley Lane, Pembroke, were both charged with attempting to murder Mr. Smith in a daylight attack on January 5 at Parsons Road in Pembroke.

Jamiko St. Clair Mole Gibbons, 23, of Happy Valley Road, Devonshire is only alleged to have assaulted Mr. Smith, though he is also charged with possessing an offensive weapon ? a machete ? at the time of the attack.

Marson and Evans are also charged with possessing a machete and gardening hoe, respectively.

Additionally Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke alleged that Evans damaged a motorcycle in the attack.

Having covertly entered Magistrates? Court through the buildings? back entrance, the three accused remained quiet throughout yesterday?s proceedings, occasionally speaking to their lawyers.

The three were not required to enter pleas as the charges are indictable.

After lengthy bail proceedings, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Marson and Evans to custody until their next court appearance on January 24.

Gibbons, charged with the lesser offences of common assault and possession of an offensive weapon, was released on $5,000 bail under the condition he ?stays away from the prosecution?s witnesses?, Mr. Warner said.

Evans is represented by lawyer Charles Richardson, Marson by Anthony Richardson and Gibbons by Craig Attridge.

Rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mr. Smith underwent emergency surgery for his injuries which included an eight-inch gash in his head and lacerations to his body.

Last night, a hospital spokeswoman said Mr. Smith was ?quite stable now and on a general ward?.
