The 11 Bermuda Police officers helping with the Hurricane Ivan recovery effort in the Caymans are expected to return to Bermuda early next week.

Police media spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday he had not spoken with the officers since they left the Island. With power restored to George Town only yesterday, Mr. Caines said he assumed that ?no news was good news?. Mr. Caines said their absence should would not have an impact on daily operations here.

?It will be policing as usual. We have organised the shift patterns to make sure that officers are always on and that no officers have to put in extra hours,? said Mr. Caines.

With two football games scheduled to take place at BAA field tonight, a team of ten Police Support Unit officers are expected to stop at the field on their usual patrol route.

The Bermuda officers were placed in the Caymans at the request of the British Foreign Office to reinforce officers there facing lawlessness and looting amid the hurricane destruction.

They joined 20 additional officers from the Turks and Caicos and the British Virgin Islands.

With basic items scarce, they took their own food and water.

As the Ivan relief effort continues, Major Lindsay Rowe of the Salvation Army said yesterday he is making plans to transport relief supplies from Barbados to Grenada this week with $82,000 in local donations.

Susan Spencer-Arscott of the Bermuda Red Cross said yesterday St. George?s Prep, the Bermuda Scout Association, XL Capital, and the Spring Garden restaurant had raised a total of $47,254 in funds. The Red Cross Ivan relief fund is expected to stay open until the end of the year.
