Budget will be felt in motorists' pockets when the Motor Car Amendment Act 1997 is passed into law.

The bill was tabled on Wednesday in the House of Assembly along with the Government Omnibus Amendment Regulations 1997, Government Omnibus (Fares) Amendment Regulations 1997 and the Marine Board (Ferry Service Fares) Amendment Regulations 1997.

These bills will make a five percent increase in bus and ferry fares law while enabling the elderly and disabled to travel free of charge.

Licence fees for motor cycles not exceeding 100 cc will cost $52.20, cycles over 100 cc but below 125 cc will cost $60.60 and the price will be $98.40 for bikes over 125 cc.

Meanwhile, licences will range from $167.90 for small cars to $876.00 for larger ones.

But it will not be just the general motoring public who will feel the pinch as other classes of vehicles will also be hit with new licence fees.

Licences for taxis will cost $240.

And drivers of community service vehicles will also see their licence fees increased.

Drivers of omnibuses or airport limousines will have to pay between $807 and $1,611 for their licences. Fees for boat trailers will be $330 while boat trailers for use by boat clubs or their members will cost $72.

And trailers will also be assessed by their size with fees ranging from $84 to $345.

Meanwhile, bus travel will now cost passengers $2.50 for a trip through three zones and $4 for a trip through 14 zones while passengers using tokens will be charged $2.25 and $3.75 respectively.

A booklet of 15 tickets covering three-zone travel will cost $15 under the new amendments and a similar booklet for 14-zone travel will cost $24.

And monthly passes for travel up to 14 zones will cost $40 while quarterly passes for travel in up to 14 zones will be $105.

Students and children will have to pay $1 for 14 zones if they pay cash. A monthly pass will cost $17, a term pass $38 and a 15-ticket booklet is $6.

Ferry riders to Somerset and Paget or Warwick will be charged $3.75 and $2.25 respectively for cash-paying passengers. Tokens will cost $24 for a pack of 15 to Somerset and $15 for 15 to Warwick or Paget.

Students and children will now pay $6 for a pack of 15 tokens to either destination and transporting an auxiliary cycles on the Somerset service will cost $3.75.
