Charity walk raises insurance scholarship funds

Some 40 participants took part in a 13-mile charity walk to raise money to support insurance-related studies for young Bermudians.The Georgia State University Bermuda Railway Trek, which follows a route from Somerset to Shelley Bay, was hosted by Paul Scope, of JLT Park Ltd last Thursday morning.The annual event was founded in 2004 by Gary Meggs, of Southern Companyand Greg McCollister, of McGriff, Seibels & Williams, to support Bermudian students studying risk management and insurance, or actuarial scienece at Georgia State.The event had raised $143,000 through June 2011and has awarded $70,000 to six undergraduate students since 2008.A reception was held last Wednesday evening at the Allied World building to honour this year’s recipients.Former CedarBridge Academy student Danae Trott and former Saltus Grammar School student Ade Brown, two of the beneficiaries, are studying actuarial science.Coutney Coddington, previously a Bermuda College student, is studying risk management and insurance.Shannan Swan, a human resources administrator at HSBC Bermuda, and Leticia Smith, a risk analyst at Ariel Reinsurance, are also beneficiaries, in the graduating class of 2001 in the BBA in risk management and insurance course.
