The Bermuda College is holding a prayer vigil today for perhaps its most famous faculty member, chef Fred Ming.

Chef Ming was seriously injured in a road accident last Thursday.

Mr. Ming, now retired from formal teaching, is one of the College's early faculty members, having been on the original staff of the Hotel School when it opened on the Stonington Campus nearly 30 years ago.

A release from the College yesterday said: “He is a much-loved member of the College family and the community at large. Recently he held a book signing at the College on behalf of the Friends of the College Library for which he pulled out all the stops in terms of food preparation. Nearly 60 of his celebrated cookbooks were sold at that event alone.”

The prayer vigil will be led by Bishop Dr. Vernon Lambe, Pastor of the First Church of God on North Shore, the Ming family's place of worship. The vigil will be held in the Blue Room of New Hall, beginning at 1p.m. Directional signs will be posted. All are welcome. For further information, please call 239 4034.

Signing of Dismont condolence book

The public are invited to sign a condolence book for the late Cecil Dismont, a former Mayor of Hamilton, at City Hall today.

Current Mayor Lawson Mapp and members of the Corporation of Hamilton arranged to have the signing in the Foyer of City Hall today from 9 a.m. to 4.45 p.m., and again on Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Out of respect for Mr. Dismont, the Corporation offices will close at noon on Friday. Mr. Dismont was a member of the Corporation for 35 years, rising through the ranks from Common Councillor to become the first black Mayor of the City between 1988 and 1994.

The condolence book will be sent to his widow and children, as a testament to the high regard in which Mr. Dismont was held as Mayor, as a businessman, and as a friend.
