Chameleons tighten grip on men?s league

Chameleons are sitting on the best record in the Bermuda Hockey Federation after picking up another win on the weekend over defending champions Panthers.

With only one loss this season, Chameleons have a stronghold on the men?s league with their 33 points ? ten ahead of nearest challengers Upstarts.

Sunday?s 2-1 victory over Panthers only added to their momentum.

League-leading scorer Stevie Moreton hammered home another goal on Chameleons? first short corner of the match, just six minutes into play.

The goal thrust the Reds into the lead but was the only one of Chameleons? 16 short corners to hit the mark.

That record, however, was still better than Panthers, who failed to convert any of their six short corner opportunities.

Panthers did scramble on the scoreboard with a Jonathan Whitefield goal in open play minutes before the end of the first half but couldn?t add a second.

Chameleons captain Pete Illston put the game away for the Reds late in the second half with an open play goal.

In other men?s play, Upstarts and Rebels battled to a 2-2 draw.

Rebels seemed to have this game in the bag after climbing to a 2-1 lead on the back of goals from Dave Gutteridge and Richard Adlam, both in the second half, after Dave Turner had secured Upstarts first goal.

But Donnie Moniz played spoiler, finding the back of the net in the 66th minute to leave the sides all square.

In the Women?s A league, Ravens enjoyed a 7-1 scoring romp over Police Bluebirds.

Megan Spurling had a stellar match with five goals for Ravens, four of which she secured in the space of just eight minutes.

Emily Black and Anna Simmons each added goals to bring Ravens total to seven while Chrisanthea Bartley nabbed Bluebirds? lone goal.

Swallows also continued their winning streak with a 3-0 victory over Canaries.

Lisa Haynes picked up two goals while Yvonne Slattery added the third.

Swifts A secured their first win of the year, 2-1, at the expense of Cardinals.

Keisha Robinson and Angela Fox each scored once for Swifts while Maria Pichery put Cards on the board.

In the Women?s B league, Swifts were also successful over Cards with a 4-1 result.

Francesca Cacace, Keisha Robinson, Brittany Farias and Annilee McBeth all found the net for Swifts while Laura Robinson slotted away Cardinals?only goal.

Swallows earned a 3-0 win over Canaries with Karen Campbell picking up two goals and Marguerite O?Connell adding a third.

Bluebirds grabbed a 1-0 win over Ravens on Monday night with Ellie Reoch nabbing the game?s lone goal.

And Bluebirds and Wildcats drew 1-1 on Saturday with Donna Douglas scoring for the former and Alecia Holder for the latter.

The women?s divisions remain tight at the top with Swallows sitting in pole position with a slim one-point lead in both.

Ravens are fighting for top spot in the A division while Swifts are the main challenger in the B division.
