VISITOR’S VIEW
A memorable holidayMay 19, 2011Dear Sir,Our recent trip to Bermuda was above expectations. We hadn’t realised that such a small island had so much to offer. We expected beautiful beaches and scenery, but even this exceeded our wildest dreams. The colour of the sand and sea was unbelievably breathtaking. The unexpected factor was the fascinating history of Bermuda from St George’s to Dockyard. It’s so easy for visitors to get around with comprehensive transport links by bus and ferry. We were fortunate that during our stay, the annual Peppercorn Ceremony took place and it was quite a spectacle. We expected more tourists to be present and wonder if it is advertised sufficiently. The experience at St George’s could be developed further. The re-enactment of the Ducking Stool was excellent and was both informative and entertaining for all present. The Tucker House museum was a fascinating insight into a bygone era, with a very informative guide. We explored St Peter’s church and graveyard and the Bermuda Perfumery. It was also interesting to use our tourist map to identify some of the older buildings in St George’s which are currently private residences. The walk past the unfinished church and Tobacco Bay towards St Catherine’s Fort was delightful and the fort itself was well worth a visit. The city of Hamilton has everything the modern shopper could look for with colourful shop frontages spoilt only by modern office blocks which might be a necessary evil. I wish planners would restrict development to buildings that fit in with the charm of Hamilton. That said you have a plethora of fine parks and elegant stores. The Cathedral was an impressive building and well worth a visit. Fort Hamilton gives splendid views over the city and beyond and is a piece of history on the door step.We spent a day at Dockyard and there was lots to do there. I can recommend the Bermuda National Museum in its fine Georgian Building. We were very fortunate to dine in some of your finest restaurants, notably Tom Moore’s Tavern.Other interesting sights included Gibb’s Lighthouse, the Aquarium and Zoo which is an excellent place to visit for children and adults. Can we add that the warm friendly welcome of all the Bermudians, and helpful staff in shops, on public transport and information offices made the holiday memorable.TONY AND SALLY KINGSBURYSouth Wales
