Caines plots revenge in big fight rematch

Jerome Caines and Trace Easton will go toe to toe this weekend for bragging rights among Bermuda's boxers.

The bout will gives Caines a chance for revenge over his rival who knocked him out in their last encounter.

Their clash will be the highlight of a huge evening of bouts entitled Boxing Mania to be held at the CedarBridge Academy Gym on Saturday night, starting at 8.00.

Event organiser Nir Sadeh is aiming for a big turnout from fight hungry fans and hopes those drawn to the Under-17 soccer match on the same evening will finish their night at the side of the boxing ring.

Sadeh, who organises the popular Teachers Fight Nights, said he believed the Island needed more events such as this, part of the aim of which was to prime fighters for the forthcoming Caribbean Boxing Championships in the Bahamas in April.

"What we have at the moment is not enough for Bermuda, especially with the guys we have that are dedicated to boxing," Sadeh said about the local fight scene. "We want to get them more fights, more bouts, especially if they are going to go away to the Bahamas. You can't go into the ring with a record of two and two.

"They train so much but they are just not getting the outlet to hone their skills."

Part proceeds from the event will be donated towards the Bermuda Amateur Boxing Association in order that they can fund next year's trip.

Sadeh said the card ran the full gamut of experience but all had the necessary desire.

"We will have a couple of rookie fights, people coming out for the first time," he said. "They are green - they've sparred, they've trained but they have never fought before.

"The latter half of the card will be a more serious mix of boxers and we have one of the strongest cards that I have seen since I have been doing this in the last five or six years."

While the men are the main focus of the evening, the spotlight will also fall on the women with Teresa Santucci taking on Nicola Burchall.

Advance tickets are $20 ($25 at the door) and are available from Arcade Barber Shop, C-Mart, Docksiders, International Sports Shop, The Pro Shop, Music World, Sports 'R' Us or by calling 236-3748. Spectators must be 18 years of age or older.
