Ocean View to host big event
thrust itself amongst the top clubs in the Island when the first Johnnie Walker Black Label Championship was announced yesterday. The tournament, which will yield a minimum pro purse of $3,000 and offers two round-trip tickets to Jamaica to watch the Johnnie Walker World Championship of Golf in December, will be held on September 25-27. Organisers expect a field of up to 110 golfers, 30 pros and 80 amateurs.
The professionals will play a 54-hole competition beginning on September 25, and the amateurs and seniors take to the course the following day.
"J.E. Lightbourn are very pleased to sponsor this tournament,'' said managing director Trevor Nicholls. "To get this tournament off to a very good start we are offering as a prize a free trip to Jamaica to anyone scoring a hole-in-one.
"The value of this trip is $6,000 and they will be guests of Johnnie Walker at the prestigious World Championship of Golf where such players as Nick Faldo, Tom Kite, Fred Couples and the last winner of the PGA, Nick Price, will also be playing. This will be held at the famous Tryall Golf Club in Jamaica and it is a fabulous prize.'' For the winning amateur an Ocean View jacket in the club colours with a Johnnie Walker logo will annually be the chief prize. "It will be a great addition to Ocean View,'' added Nicholls. "We hope this will help to put Ocean View firmly on the golfing scene in Bermuda. We have an excellent golf course, close to Hamilton, a new clubhouse under construction and a first-class staff under the direction of Wendell Tucker, and we think this will make for a very, very successful tournament.'' The deadline for entering is September 18.
