No nudes is good news for American tourist Joseph Rak who checked out of the Fairmont Southampton Princess after checking out publicly displayed pictures of naked women.

New Jersey businessman Joseph Rak rang The Royal Gazette yesterday and said: “There are six pictures of a naked black woman hanging up by the pool in the old gym.

“I am very offended by it. In fact I checked out and went to the Sonesta because of that reason.”

“The manager was like it doesn't bother him, although he said he would take them down.

“It's been a nightmare trying to run round and find a place to stay which don't have these kind of pictures.”

He said he had taken pictures of the offending images. He said: “This is very distasteful for this type of hotel.”

The pictures, showing a silhouetted poses of a nude woman against a backdrop of flowers and grass, were in a side corridor not normally used by guests because it led to a disused spa room. Fairmont Southampton Princess general manager Norman Mastalir said: “I guess you could say they are a little bit provocative but they are not porn. Mr. Rak came in and said there were some objectionable photos which were the work of the devil, that they were porn, that we should not be promoting that to children.

“We debated that, I don't think it was porn.

“A spa is a celebration of the human body and the photos were in the old spa which is closed.

“Spas are an adult environment, they are not for children.”

Mr. Mastalir said he offered to take the pictures down.

He said: “It doesn't matter to us, we could have debated all day, whether they were good, bad or indifferent. We took them down. I asked if that would be all right but he said he needed compensation, he had booked a room at the Sonesta, rented a bike and logged hours on the Internet researching other hotels. He spent some time in the bar and decided to leave anyway. I don't know what to make of this, it's kind of strange. We did our best to rectify the situation and keep him happy but I guess he decided he didn't want to stay.” He said Mr. Rak was refunded for his stay. He added: “We have never had any other guests complain about them. We have had them there for years.”

Asked if Mr. Rak was religious Mr. Mastalir said: “According to him anyway.”
