A young motorcyclist was rushed to hospital with serious injuries last night after colliding at high speed with a taxi near Raynor's Gas Station in Southampton.

The crash happened shortly before 8.30 p.m. on the accident blackspot in Middle Road, with one eyewitness saying the collision was head-on.

The witness said the victim, whom she described as a male youth, was lying motionless on the road following the crash.

At press time last night, Police said the youth had been taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, but they had no update on his condition.

Police sealed off Scenic Heights and Camp Road, which caused traffic disruption to traffic as Police scenes of crime officers and road traffic investigators examined the crash.

A Fire Service spokesman said personnel from Port Royal Station gave emergency treatment at the scene to the male until he was taken to hospital.

Eyewitness Theresa Tucker said she saw the victim overtake her car at high speed, followed by another youth on a bike less than two minutes before the accident.

"He was overtaking us at White's Grocery Store and then his friend came round and they were overtaking us wide. After that he was flat out on the road. He wasn't moving and parts of his bike were all over the road.

"People were going to help him but he wasn't moving at all. It looks like he struck the taxi head-on. It seemed like they were doing no less than 60, they were really moving."
