A 31-year-old man who stole motorcycles to feed his 20-year drug addiction was sentenced to two years in prison in the Supreme Court last week.

Germal (Sticks) Williams, of no fixed abode, asked for help with his drug addiction, which he had suffered since he was a child, before being sentenced.

Crown counsel Shade Subair told the court on Thursday that the pre-sentencing reports revealed Williams had stolen the motorcycles because he had become addicted to heroin when he was aged 15, and cocaine and cannabis when he was just 12.

Ms Subair said Williams had been found guilty of stealing three motorbikes in Magistrates' Court and had been sent to Supreme Court for sentencing because of his "novel" of previous convictions.

When Assistant Justice Archibald Warner asked Williams if he had anything to say for himself, he said: "I apologise to the bike's owners and to the courts for wasting their time.

"I would also like to receive drug treatment as well, if possible."

Assistant Justice Warner sentenced Williams to two years in prison and a following two years probation with drug treatment.
