Teen improves after accident

A 16-year-old boy was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital this week after his bike was in collision with a car.

Police said the teenager was travelling west on his auxiliary cycle when he tried to overtake the vehicle in front of him near Byrdie's Cafe on Parsons Road, Pembroke.

The cycle and car were badly damaged. The boy was in stable condition at hospital.

Blaze causes extensive damage

A woman's dinner proved more expensive than she anticipated.

The stove caught fire, causing extensive damage to her Happy Valley Road, Devonshire home.

Firemen were alerted at 10.22 p.m. on Tuesday night, but the blaze was out when they arrived.

“The oil got too hot, boiled over and came out of the pot,” Fire Service spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell said.

“When the oil caught fire, it damaged the cupboards and kitchen ceiling. There was smoke damage in the living room, kitchen and hallway.”

He added there was “a lot of heat damage in the kitchen”.

Support group's first meeting set

A support group is being formed for people with irregular heartbeats.

It is targeted at patients with expensive high-tech devices called automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillators (AICD).

AICDs monitor the heart 24 hours a day and correct abnormal beats through electrical shock.

Organisers hope the group will boost knowledge about AICDs and how to live with them.

It is expected that meetings will consist of shared personal experiences and talks by medical professionals.

The first meeting will be on July 20 at the Bermuda Red Cross, ‘Charleswood', 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget.

There are at least 33 heart patients in Bermuda who have AICDs, some of whom have also been implanted with pacemakers, which control heart rates.

“All AICD patients in Bermuda are invited to attend the meetings, and those attending are encouraged to bring with them a spouse or a close friend,” said one of the organisers.

Woman, 69, hit by car

A 69-year-old Pembroke woman is in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after being hit by a car.

The accident took place at 11.40 a.m. on Tuesday at the junction of Middle Road and Marsh Lane in Devonshire.

Firemen said the woman, who was underneath the car for a short time, was in satisfactory condition.

Construction to affect cycle parking

Almost all cycle parking at City Hall will be eliminated by the temporary bus terminal that is to be set up on Dismont Drive.

The Royal Gazette estimates 200 cycle parking spaces will be lost, which Mayor of Hamilton Lawson Mapp confirmed yesterday though he would not estimate the number himself. Mr. Mapp said temporary cycle spaces will be available behind City Hall though the number of temporary spots pales in comparison to the number being eliminated.
