Man arrested in connection with caddy's murder

Five years after golf caddy Brian Sherlock's murder and a year and a half since an inquest refused to name who was responsible, Police have arrested a man in connection with the case.

A Police spokeswoman was not able to provide further information on the arrested man or what charges -- if any -- he may face in the future.

Recently The Royal Gazette learned the file on the murder had been handed back to Police after the Director of Public Prosecutions office had reviewed the evidence.

Early on May 20, 1994, Mr. Sherlock, a Mid Ocean Club golf caddy, was found lying in a pool of blood in the Dundonald Street parking lot and was taken to hospital suffering from stab wounds and head injuries.

In November, 1997 a Coroner's jury determined that Mr. Sherlock, 38, died as a result of head injuries inflicted by heavy blows.

Heavy blood loss resulting from stab wounds were deemed to contribute to his death.

Three conflicting stories emerged before the Coroner's jury on the circumstances allegedly surrounding the murder.

One account reportedly given to Police by Paco Fubler implicated three men -- himself, Damion Smith and Michael Robinson.

During a Police statement, Mr. Fubler claimed Mr. Smith picked up stick and broke it into three pieces, so each man had a length.

Mr. Fubler said all three men used the sticks to beat Mr. Sherlock after they spotted him lying in the car park.

A second version put forward by Mr. Smith's cousin, Sean Smith, focused the blame on Mr. Fubler and Mr. Robinson.

In a Police witness statement Sean Smith claimed that his relative spoke to him on the morning of the murder and told him that he did not personally attack Mr. Sherlock.

On the witness stand, Sean Smith claimed his witness statement was not true.

The third story, reportedly put forward by Mr. Robinson, suggested he was an innocent party who was in "the wrong place at the wrong time''.

He alleged that Mr. Smith brought up the idea of killing someone and the victim was the first person they saw.

Mr. Robinson told Police the three got their weapons from a pile of trash at the junction of Elliot and Princess Streets.

He said he watched as Mr. Smith and Mr. Fubler beat Mr. Sherlock in the head while he watched -- doing nothing to stop the attack.
