Garon is crowned Kata champion
ORGANISERS managed to field only six competitors for last Sunday's Lepercq Memorial Traditional Karate Tournament. What they lacked in numbers, however, they compensated for in excitement during the hour-long competition at Pembroke Sunday School last weekend.
By the end of it, Garon Wilkinson was crowned Kata Grandchampion ahead of brown-belt John O'Doherty and purple-belt Isaac Griffiths.
The Kata format has competitors perform ancient martial arts exercises which resemble, according to organiser Kristina Ingham, modern shadow boxing.
Otero Smith also achieved gold by edging out Griffiths and Damion Wilson in the ippon kumite format. Competitors in this field spar against each other and earn points based on what techniques they employ.
Although the tournament was successful, organisers plan to adjust the format to attract a larger field:
"We've found that there isn't much of an interest in this sort of format," explained Mrs. Ingham. "Next year we will probably make it more open so more people will take part."
