Bermuda braces for student invasion

Bermuda will be a hub of activity in the coming weeks as it hosts more than 450 student athletes and coaches for Spring Break.

Several North American universities and colleges will again be using the Island for their annual getaway, taking the time to train and get some extra competition.

Among those visiting Bermuda will be a women's lacrosse team from New York University, men's and women's golf teams from the University of Pittsburgh, Scranton University's men's tennis team and Aquinas College's (Michigan) women's tennis players.

Some Canadian high-school teams will also be coming from Canada.

The Bermuda Department of Tourism's Manager of Sports Promotion, Cleon Scotland, indicated that as usual the Department would be doing its part to ensure the visitors felt at home here.

"This year's weekly welcome receptions will be held outdoors at Cafe Lido at Elbow Beach and other activities during the week include a glass-bottom/fish-feeding boat tour and visit to Dockyard (which includes Dolphin Quest) and a scenic bus ride and tour of Crystal Caves," he said.

While many teams will just be training some will compete against other overseas teams as well as local clubs, he added.

Scotland also announced a new slate of Spring Break sponsors, including Kodak Express/Somers Distributors (disposable cameras), Internet Lane (Internet access) and Logic Communications (phone cards).
