Thief ruins Green's Open

The PGA veteran, on the Island for the $50,000 Bermuda Open, had his golf bag and clubs stolen from Port Royal Golf Course sometime after Friday's second round.

His personalised bag was later recovered at another golf course -- the Southampton Princess -- tournament officials confirmed yesterday.

Ironically, the thief took Green's irons but left two woods intact.

The indicent was reported to Police.

Green, a member of the 1989 US Ryder Cup team and winner of five PGA tournaments in his career, borrowed the clubs of a friend -- amateur Kevin Richardson -- and completed the tournament with rounds of 75 on Saturday and 71 yesterday. Richardson withdrew.

That left Green in a tie for ninth and around $1,500 -- about the cost of a new set of irons.

Players say the theft of clubs is not uncommon on the PGA Tour. But that's the US, not Bermuda.
