Swan upbeat at World Cup qualifier

model as he bids to make his name in world golf.

Swan is in Jamaica as part of Bermuda's two-man team playing in the 36-hole qualifying tournament of the Heineken World Cup at the Super Clubs Golf Club at the Jamaica Jamaica Resort starting today. His partner is Cornell Bean who has replaced injured Dwayne Pearman.

Swan recently linked up with top coach David Leadbetter, the man who put Nick Faldo on the way to fame and fortune, and has also been playing on one of the mini tours in Florida. He intends to go to the United States qualifying school later in the year to try to earn his card for the regular tour.

Said Swan: "I like to play in the World Cup because it gives you the chance to test yourself and measure your game against the best players in the world.

There is no prize money this week but I'm happy to play for nothing.

"It's great to represent your country and, anyway, if we qualify we will have a chance of winning money in the World Cup proper later in the year.'' Swan played the European Tour in the early 1980s and is a great admirer of Singh, four times a tournament winner in Europe and winner of the Buick Classic on the US Tour last year.

"Singh has come from a country that is not famous for producing world-class golfers, but he has shown what can be done with hard work, dedication and practice.'' A total of 23 nations are contesting this Western Zone qualifier. The top four will go into the final field of 32 when the 40th Heineken World Cup is held at the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort in Puerto Rico from November 10-13.

A further 26 countries will play in the Eastern Zone qualifier at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Thailand on September 10-11 and again the top four will go through.
