St George’s Golf Course could open soon announcement expected today
The St George’s Golf Course could soon be open for play again, with Government expected to announce some details as soon as today.During a meeting in St George’s last night regarding the potential development of a new hotel and marina in the town, Deputy Mayor Garth Rothwell told a crowd of East End residents that the course could soon be reopened on a temporary basis.“Moves are afoot,” he said. “You won’t be able to go around in golf carts, you’ll have to drag your clubs around, but its still good.”A representative of the Ministry of Tourism told the crowd: “I can say we are about to announce that it looks positive that it’s a go. We are just waiting on the final paperwork.”The St George’s Golf Club closed its doors in July of 2008 in the build-up to the implosion of the old Club Med site. The Golf Club itself has since been demolished. The course is expected to be overhauled as the new Park Hyatt project moves forward, with a major redesign by Nick Faldo.Opposition Leader and St George’s MP Kim Swan said he was excited about the reopening, calling the course an important draw for the East End.The former head pro at the course said: “I think it’s a positive step. It’s the best thing for the town,” he said. “I believe that East Enders have come to believe that a golf course is an important amenity which can bring visitors and locals to the area.“It’s important that we move forward with the type of amenity that will encourage people to come to St George’s.”
