British Prime Minister's wife Cherie Blair is not the only one with a fondness for visiting Bermuda.

An ABC website reported that her husband Tony Blair wanted to have Sunday's Anglo-American-Spanish summit here rather than in the Azores.

However that bid was blocked by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar because of Bermuda's close proximity to the US and because Portugal should play a role. The Azores has a US base and the facilities to host the conference.

However British Sunday newspaper The Observer reported yesterday that Bermuda proved a nemesis for British Premier Harold Macmillan at his first summit meeting with US President Dwight D. Eisenhower in March 1957.

The paper described it as among the most humiliating attended by a British Prime Minister as the Americans read the riot act over the Suez disaster in which UK and French forces had attacked Egypt after President Nassar nationalised the Suez Canal.
