Somerset blast miserable parish

Striker Dwight Basden scored four goals and five other team-mates chipped in with one apiece as Somerset Trojans produced the biggest win between two First Division teams this season in this Friendship Trophy match at Somerset Cricket Club.

After staying in contention for the first half-hour, when they trailed by just Basden's 16th-minute opener, Parish were blown off the pitch by two late first-half goals and six more in the second half.

After Basden beat him with a left-foot shot, Parish goalkeeper George Fox did well to deflect Basden's 18th-minute pass to the far post, which was intended for Rodney Bascome.

Parish lost a key man in their defence in the 25th minute when they were forced to replace injured Trinn Burgess with Ashton Outerbridge.

Five minutes later Parish came close to grabbing an equaliser when Quinn Outerbridge met a long ball into the Somerset defence from Chris Caisey only to lob the ball onto the top of the crossbar as 'keeper Cordell Gilbert advanced.

Somerset finished the half with two late goals and from then there was never any doubt as to the winner....only the the margin of victory.

Randy Simmons scored from the penalty spot in the 38th minute after John Nichol handled in the box and Basden added the third two minutes later from close range following a corner on the right by Webb.

Somerset completed the `six pack' with three goals in five minutes early in the second half, as Shannon Morrissey hit the fourth in the 52nd minute with a left-footed shot that crept under Fox.

Parish were unlucky with a shot from Sinclair Gibbons on the right that hit the far post but Somerset showed them how to score when Webb again provided a cross from the left and Basden knocked the ball home from close range to complete his hat-trick in the 56th minute.

A minute later another Webb cross saw the ball break free for full-back Brian Simons to smash a left-foot shot from 25 yards into the roof of the net. It was the best goal of the night.

Parish were now just going through the motions as Somerset kept on the pressure and added a seventh in the 64th minute when Basden set up Rodney Bascome to score with a free header.

Parish were determined to avoid the shut-out and did so in the 74th minute when Irving Burgess' header at the far post was steered over the line by Gibbons.

But Somerset were not finished either and closed it out with two more goals in the 76th and 85th minutes. Basden hit his fourth with a volley at the far post from a cross on the left minute and then Webb's free kick found left-back Larry Simmons who rose and headed past Fox to make it 9-1.

Basden had a fifth goal disallowed for offside on substitute Amel Thomas. To complete their night of misery Parish also had four players -- Walton Burgess, Kacy Simons, Nichol and Caisey -- booked by referee Gregory Belboda.
