A schoolboy taken to hospital after he was arrested suffered swelling to his eye and nose, the trial of a Police officer accused of assaulting him heard yesterday.

Dr. Peter Babeckas gave a written statement in the trial of P.c. Terrance Smith, 43, who denies assaulting 15-year-old Devron Richardson (pictured) after arresting him on February 13 last year.

The youth suffered ?obvious swelling? but no fractures and complained he had been punched three times before blacking out, Dr. Babeckas wrote.

Mr. Richardson testified on Tuesday that he blacked out in the back of a Police van after Smith, who was accompanied by two other officers, punched him in the face.

Under cross-examination yesterday from Smith?s lawyer Delroy Duncan, the schoolboy said the other officers did not say or do anything during the alleged attack.

Mr. Duncan has suggested the attack did not take place and that the youth sustained his injuries while trying to escape from the van.

The trial has heard Mr. Richardson was arrested by P.c. Smith for stealing his pedal bike and had originally lied when he said he did not take it.

Two Police officers have testified there was a ?shouting match? at Hamilton Police Station between Smith and the boy?s father Kevin after the latter demanded to know if the accused attacked his son.

Acting Inspector Steven Donnelly testified on Tuesday that he had to physically intervene to separate Smith from Mr. Richardson and later told the officer his behaviour was ?totally unprofessional?.

He said Smith apologised and said he was upset because he had been accused of assaulting the boy, which he denied. The trial before Magistrate William Francis was adjourned yesterday after Crown counsel Cindy Clarke completed the prosecution case. It will resume on August 9.
