Magistrates? Court pulled in $8,000 in fines before the Cup Match holiday on Wednesday from two men with driving related offences dating back to last year.

Charles Burgess, 22, of Wilson Place, Sandys, and Shannon Smith, 24, of Spice Hill Road Warwick, both appeared in court to face a list of charges for driving with licenses, no car insurance, and driving without due care and attention. Magistrate Ed King put both of the men on payment plans ordering them to fork over several hundred dollars a week or spend that time in jail. Both men entered guilty pleas to all the charges.

Burgess was charged with driving a bike in December 2003 without a drivers license, a $100 fine. On that same date he was charged with driving without due care and attention on Long Bay Road in Sandys when he car collided with another vehicle making a right hand turn. He was ordered to pay a $300 fine for failing to stop his vehicle when requested by the Police.

On July 4, 2002 Burgess was charged with speeding at 65 kilometres on Middle Road in Sandys and was fined $260. On that same date he failed to stop when required on Middle Road and was fined an additional $300. Burgess paid a $290 fine for speeding a 68 kilometres in Southampton on that date. He also did not have a valid drivers license and was fined $100 in addition to failing to present his vehicle registration a $300 fine in June 2002. He was also fined $100 for failing to give his name and address.

On October 3 Burgess was caught driving without a license and fined $200. On the same date he also disobeyed a traffic sign and was slapped with a $150 fine. His fines total $2100.

Smith, who?s fines come to a total of $5,900 also faced a variety of charges for repeatedly driving without insurance or his license.

On December 29, 2003 Smith was charged with driving without due care and attention and fined $300. On January 1, 2004 he was fined $750 for permitting the use of an unregistered motor car, $1,000 for no third party insurance. Two days later Smith was fined $100 for failing to give the names of car passengers to the Police.

On January 23 Smith was also fined $2500 for no third party insurance, $300 for driving without due care and attention and $200 for not having his drivers license. Smith was also charged on that same date with driving an unregistered car and fined $750.

Smith asked Magistrate Ed King to give him time to pay. ?You?ve had a lot of time to pay,? said Mr. King.

?This morning I woke up at the Police station,? Smith told the court.

?You must have been comfortable then,? said Mr. King. He was ordered to begin making a dent in his fines by paying the court $850 a week.
