Witness appeal in Caisey death

Police investigating the road traffic death of Alshe Caisey Sunday have now spoken to all six riders who were speeding along North Shore Road, Smith's at the time of the crash.

But they are urging anyone else who witnessed the accident to come forward.

Ms Caisey, 20, died when the bike on which she was a passenger lost control and crashed shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Six bikes were reportedly speeding east along North Shore Road at the time of the crash.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday that Police have spoken to all the riders but wanted to appeal to other witnesses.

The youth driving the bike suffered a broken leg in the crash.

Ms Caisey, of Slip Road, St. George's, became the ninth person killed on Bermuda's roads this year and was the third to die in the space of 11 days.

Guilty vows not to get caught again

A Sandy's resident said he would not quit smoking cannabis but that he would not get caught again in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Wolde Gardner, 29, of Spring Benny Road was fined $500 after the court heard he was stopped by Police on March 20.

Gardner was driving on Mullet Bay Road when he was stopped for a vehicle infraction. When questioned by a Police officer he turned around and was grabbing at his jacket pocket, the court heard.

The Police searched the man and found plant-like material in his pocket. The material was later examined and found to be .90 grams of cannabis.

In court yesterday Gardner apologised and told Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves it would not happen again.

"You're not going to smoke cannabis anymore," Mr. Greaves asked.

To which the man replied: "No I'm just not going to get caught again."

He was fined $500 for the possession of cannabis.

A vicious cycle of incarceration

A 46-year old man explained in Magistrates' court yesterday that he would not be able to pay his fines if Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves continued to incarcerate him.

Alexander Ming of South Road in Warwick was fined $500 yesterday after pleading guilty to giving Police a false name. Crown Counsel Shakira Dill said Ming also owed $1,000 in fines to the court.

"The reason I couldn't pay those fines is because I was incarcerated," Ming explained to Mr. Greaves.

"I won't keep getting incarcerated if you don't keep incarcerating me for not paying the fines," he continued.

Mr. Greaves returned the man to jail for not being able to pay his current court fine.

Pedalling impaired?

A man who was allegedly caught driving while impaired on his pedal cycle has been remanded in custody.

Steve Smith, 57, of Douglas Drive, Smith's, pleaded not guilty in Magistrates' Court Monday.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves set the matter down for trial on August 22.

Thief hits Horseshoe
