Visitor accuses Police of inquiry whitewash
An American visitor who last week claimed he was struck by a car driven by former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith said he was ?flabbergasted? that Police were no longer looking into the matter due to lack of evidence.
?We stand by what we said initially,? Ron Carvalho of New Jersey told in a telephone interview. ?My concern is that the whole thing is being whitewashed.?
Mr. Carvalho and his wife allege that they were knocked off their rental cycle on August 13 when a car driven by Dame Jennifer struck them near Tobacco Bay.
In a Press release on Friday, Police concluded that there was ?an absence of evidence that the car and the livery cycle came into contact with each other as described by the tourists? due to conflicting accounts from eyewitnesses and expert analysis from a Traffic Collision Investigator. Mr. Carvalho, who broke his collarbone when his bike crashed, now wants to see all Police reports surrounding the incident.
?To say that the car never touched the scooter is an outright lie and a violation to us. They basically released a lie,? Mr. Carvalho said.
Mr. Carvalho sent an accident report to which suggested a collision took place. The report said that the livery cycle, owned by Smatt?s Cycle Livery Ltd., suffered damage to its front side and that there were scratches on the driver?s side bumper of Dame Jennifer?s Peugeot convertible.
?I am flabbergasted to say the least. My wife was in tears after she read the article,? Mr. Carvalho said.
?I just wanted to write everything off (but) they are saying that there was no collision between the two vehicles, yet both sustained damage.?
