A 14-year-old girl learned the hard way on Wednesday in Juvenile Court that it does not pay to tell a lie, when she was sentenced to a year's probation.

The schoolgirl pleaded guilty to riding under-age, speeding and giving Police false information.

Crown Counsel Cindy Clark told the panel that the Pembroke girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was stopped by Police on June 21 this year, after the bike she was riding was clocked at 58 km on Middle Road in Devonshire.

She gave officers incorrect information, not knowing there was a warrant out for the person who she claimed to be, said Ms Clarke. "What was she doing out at 11.25 at night?" Magistrate Tyrone Chin asked the girl's mother.

"She was staying at someone's house and said that she forgot a blouse that she wanted," her mother replied.

And when he sentenced the girl to a year's probation, which included an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, he encouraged the girl's mother to be vigilant that her daughter comply with the order.

"You are our eyes," he told her, encouraging her not to easily believe everything her daughter tells her.
