Homestead Miami Speedway has proven to be a good hunting ground for Cody Sousa-Saints.And if all goes according to plan the teenaged motorcycle racer hopes that trend will continue when he returns to the Florida racetrack for this weekend’s CCS season-opener.The motorcycle mechanic, whose trip has been made possible through sponsors Correia Construction, is competing in the 600cc class on a Ducati 848 bike loaned to him by a friend.This weekend will mark Saints’ third time competing at this level and first in the middleweight superbike and supersport classes.Having already competed in the 1000cc class the promising rider should encounter few challenges making the transition to the lower classes.“It’s my first time on the bike so I just want to try and learn the bike and see how I feel,” Saints said. “I don’t see it being any issue learning the bike and learning the classes.”While in Florida Saints will have his work cut out for him competing against the some of the best riders in the US at that level.“It should be a really, really interesting weekend,” he said. “There’s a lot of really good riders so it’s going to be a good race and I’m pretty excited.”Last year saw Saints post three top five finishes at Homestead Miami Speedway during his debut in the 1000cc class.“It’s a really nice track and there are a lot of very hard breaking corners which I really enjoy,” he said. “There are also some really fast corners which I seem to do good on so I really like the track, it is really smooth.”Saints has set himself a few goals to strive for in Miami this weekend.“I definitely want to improve my lap times,” he said. “The track is more 600cc friendly so I feel like I can put down some really low lap times to get some really good finishes.”Saints will be accompanied in Florida by veteran motorcycle racer Paul DeCouto who is competing in the 1000cc class on his newly modified Suzuki GSXR 1000.The engine on the Cycle Care co-owner’s bike has been built up to supersport specifications while its suspension has been fixed and recalibrated.DeCouto, 42, flew to Florida last month to test his bike at Homestead Miami Speedway and was more than encouraged by the performances on track.“With the combination of having the front forks and motor upgraded I am easily doing my lap times that I was under race conditions (last year) which is a good sign so far,” he said. “My bike is up to par now and handling properly so I should be able to compete at a better level.”Saints and DeCouto depart for Miami, Florida today.
