In this age of rising costs breast milk is extremely economical. It is always available and ready to serve at the correct temperature.

Freedom from bacterial contamination is yet another asset. Breastfed babies have fewer ear infections, chest infections and episodes of diarrhoea and vomiting as well as food allergies.

Most importantly, breastfeeding creates a close bond between a mother and her newborn.

In spite of the numerous benefits of breastfeeding there are perceived barriers.

Discuss with your employer the possibility of annual leave attached to your maternity leave, reduced working hours or job sharing.

If these are not possible then discuss the provision of time and a private area to express your breast milk, as well as a refrigerator for storage of breast milk in the refrigerator for 48 hours and in the freezer for six months.

Women no longer have to remain at home to breastfeed. You may want to allow yourself time to feel comfortable and establish breastfeeding. But when you are ready for shopping or socialising you don't have to worry of sterilising bottles, preparing and warming formula, excess bags or restrictions on time because these factors will be readily available when you choose to breastfeed.

Public acceptance is increasing towards breastfeeding. There are some places that have designated areas for breastfeeding. If you do not see a sign then ask the owner/manager about facilities.

Clothing articles come in various designs to afford women comfort, practicality and discretion when breastfeeding.

Public acceptance comes with the recognition that breast is best for infants.
