Two quick-thinking builders may have saved the life of an elderly man on Sunday after the man?s boat capsized and his legs became entangled in the ropes of his punt.

Detroy Smith, 18, and Gilbert (Tiny) Grimes were working on a nearby construction site, when they saw the 83-year-old man fall into the water at Mullet Bay, St. George?s.

The two men called emergency services and quickly dove into the water to rescue the struggling senior.

But Mr. Smith, who spoke to last night about the rescue, said he only did what any normal person would have done.

?Me and the guy I was working with, Tiny, saw him fall overboard,? said Mr. Smith.

?But we saw his head pop back up so, we went back to work thinking that he was cool. But, about 20 minutes later, we heard him call for help.

?I jogged down toward the man and he was about 50 yards offshore. Me and Tiny jumped in after he (Tiny) called the ambulance.

?It was super cold in the water but we were trying to hold him up.

?He knew how to swim but he was pretty old and he had a lot of clothes on. By the time we got him out of the water the Police took over from there.?

When Marine Police officers arrived on the scene to help the man they saw the two would-be heroes rescuing him.

The man was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated for mild hypothermia and released yesterday.

A Police spokesman said the Service would ?like to commend the heroic actions of the two men, who put aside their own safety to help another member of the community?.

Mr. Smith was more modest about his and Tiny?s timely actions, however.

?It felt normal, what any normal person would do,? he said.
