A 28-year-old man, who beat another man with a pool stick and cue balls, will wait for pre-sentencing reports before being sentenced.

Nikia Javon Burchall of Middle Town Drive, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Antonio Francis when he hit him repeatedly on October 25, 2003 at the Devonshire Recreational Club.

In court yesterday, Crown counsel Lloyd Rayney read the account of the brutal attack on the man who was playing pool at the club.

Witnesses said that Burchall punched Mr. Francis in the face several times and then picked up three pool sticks.

Burchall struck him in the chest with the pool stick, which caused the victim to fall to the ground.

Burchall continued to hit him with the pool sticks until they finally shattered.

The tirade continued with Burchall throwing cue balls at the man?s face.

As Mr. Francis lay unconscious on the floor of the club, Burchall pulled down his trousers and underpants to expose his genitalia to the patrons, who witnessed the attack.

Mr. Rayney said that Mr. Francis needed 25 stitches to wounds to his left eyebrow and the top of his head.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mr. Francis said that he now suffers from ?severe migraine headaches?.

He wrote: ?I will probably never get rid of the migraines and I cannot sleep properly from the wounds to my head. The migraines hurt so much it makes me cry sometimes.?

Mr. Francis also received bruises to most of the left side of his body and his left hand still does not function properly.

He now suffers from several problems with his left eye including frequent weeping that will probably continue, a haematoma above the eye, and subconjunctival haemorrhage.

Mr. Rayney submitted that the court view the attack as ?one of the most serious of its kind?.

?This was a completely unprovoked attack,? he added.

Burchall also has a list of previous convictions of a similar nature including a conviction of unlawful assault. He committed the assault six days before the attack he is currently before the courts for, Mr. Rayney said.

Mr. Rayney asked for a six to eight year sentence.

But Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons decided to order pre-sentencing reports before continuing with the sentencing.

Burchall?s lawyer, Richard Hector, said: ?He has a drinking problem. Whenever he drinks he seems to lose control.

?He seems to be the type of person who gets so drunk he loses his self control.?

Mr. Hector requested that Burchall receive help and treatment.

Mrs. Justice Simmons ordered a Bermuda Assessment Referral Centre report and a psychological report.

Burchall was remanded in custody and will return to the court on July 1 for mention.
