American Airlines restarted service between Miami and Bermuda today. The flights to and from Miami International Airport are the first since the route was suspended in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The airline will fly from Bermuda to Miami on Friday, Sunday and Monday, leaving at 2.30pm and arriving in Miami at 4.12pm.Flights will operate from Miami to Bermuda on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, leaving at 8.05pm and arriving at 11.47pm.American said it would provide “multiple layers of protection throughout the travel journey to provide confidence about customers’ and team members’ safety and well-being”.Customers over the age of two will be required to wear masks in airports and on board aircraft. The airline said masks must be worn from the time travelers enter their departure airport until they exit their arrival airport.Travellers will be asked questions during check-in to check that they had been free of Covid-19 symptoms for 14 days. The airline said a new touchless check-in will allow customers to proceed to their gate without touching a kiosk screen, even if they have to check in a bag.American said it had expanded the use of plexiglass barriers and the frequency of cleaning in airport areas under their control, including gate areas, ticket counters, passenger service counters, baggage service offices and staff rooms. The airline said it would offer limited food and drink services to reduce contact between cabin crew and passengers. It has also instituted a regime that included disinfection of seat buckles, seats, tray tables, and other surfaces. The airline said an electrostatic spray would be used inside its planes every seven days “which kills 99.9999 per cent of viruses and bacteria within 10 minutes and last for 14 days”.American said it also used special HEPA filters so that the air in planes is refreshed every two to four minutes.
