Close call as truck, without driver, rolls onto Middle Road

A motorist had a lucky escape yesterday afternoon when a large truck with a hydraulic lift on the back rolled unattended down a driveway and through Middle Road narrowly missing his own truck.

Keith Rowntree said he was driving west along Middle Road towards Hamilton when a few feet in front of him he saw the large grey truck leaving the Waterworks driveway and enter Middle Road.

?It didn?t look like it was going to stop and I had no choice but to speed up and get passed him. He missed me by less than a foot,? he said.

Once past the truck and to safety he looked in the rear view mirror and saw the truck smash through the railing along the waterside.

?I slammed on brakes and reversed to see if the driver was hurt,? he said.

But to Mr. Rowntree?s surprise there was no one inside the truck.

?The driver must have parked the truck and forgotten to pull up the hand brake,? he said.

He added that the truck was ?smashed up pretty bad? as one of the railings had cut clean through the cab.

A motorcyclist was injured in an accident on Middle Road in Southampton yesterday morning and Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help with their investigation.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the accident, involving two motorcycles, occurred at about 7.15 a.m. near the junction of Riviera Road and Middle Road.

He said it appeared a blue Suzuki RC 100 was travelling west on Middle Road when it allegedly collided with a red Suzuki 125 travelling in the opposite direction.

The rider of the blue Suzuki was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening.
